At Home With The Stars
Kim says her dish and glass collection happened by accident. "When we got married there were 600 invited guests, and so I registered for lots of china sets because I didn't know what else to do. Luckily, we ended up with almost everything on the list, and some of the setting were for 12 people."
Kim Johnston Ulrich (Ivy, Passions) and her husband, Robert, became home owners on the strength of one room. "We basically bought the house because we loved the living room so much," she explains. "Christmas is a big deal at our house, and the possibilities for the living room are endless. We decorate the big bay window, and always have a huge Christmas tree."
As for the furnishings in the living room and the rest of the house, Kim admits to "being very eclectic in my purchasing habits." However, she confesses a weakness for Pottery Barn. "I spend hours and hours in there, and always come back with something new. I'm sure half the items in my house are from there. When not subsidizing Pottery Barn, Kim enjoys gardening. "I'm like a doddering old woman out in my rose garden, with my overalls and hat. I've turned all my friends into doddering women as well. We get together and talk about our roses. I have gardenias and some daisies, too. The roses are my favorite because they just bloom and bloom.
"I also have a vegetable garden. I grow cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, corn, eggplant, grapes, you name it. I want to grow healthy food to eat. My son is learning that you can actually grow these things, and that corn doesn't just come from the grocery store," she says with a laugh.
The garden is Kim's favorite place outside, but inside she relaxes in another manner. "Since my husband and I are both in the business (Robert is a casting director), we watch a lot of TV. I think we have" she pauses to count on her fingers "10 TVs. Pretty much every room except the bathrooms. We haven't crossed that line yet."
