ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH JAMES HYDE
How did you get the role on Passions?
I was in Miami doing another show. I actually heard from a fellow actor that there was a new NBC soap coming up and right away I thought, wow. After I was done with the show in Miami, I went to New York to audition for As the World Turns. While I was there, the Passions casting people were in New York and they wanted me to come read. I was actually brought out to Los Angeles to read for Hank. Then, they sent me a character breakdown for Sam, and when I looked at the age, I thought it was really stretching it. But, they told me not to worry about the age. And thats how the whole thing started.

Rumor has it you worked with Galen (Luis) on some of the movies he did during film school. Tell us about that!
I worked with Galen on two of his films. Galen and I had known each other for a while. He came to me with an idea for a script and of course I said Id love to do it. It was a fun script and it had a good story to it. For the second onehe threw out a couple of ideas to me and asked me which Id rather do. The one I chose was based on a true story about an armored car that flipped over in Miami and money spilled out all over. In the film, the car flips over, and I get all the money. Then when I go back to my apartment, all the paranoia sets in. It was actually really funny because when I was flying here for the screentest, I look up on the airplane and theres Galen sitting right next to me. He was coming out to screentest too!

What would be your dream storyline for Sam?
Ive been thinking about that a lot lately. Right now, Sam is the good guydevoted father and husband. Id like to see a shake-up of that. Id also like to see a touching story with my son. Its been mentioned in the script that we have a really close relationship. And Id like to do some more police stuffmore action stuff. As an actor, I do well as an action guy.

What has been your favorite scene to tape so far?
Definitely the scenes with Ivy in the closet when Grace comes in. There were a lot of different levels going on there.

If you could play any other character on the show, who would you play?
Tabitha. Juliet is so amazing. Were lucky to have her on the show.

If you couldnt be an actor, what would you be?
Id be performing music. I actually chased that for quite a few years. I used to do the kind of stuff Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock are doing nowthe rap/rock thing. I was kind of ahead of my time when I was doing it. Performing was a lot of fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Professionally, I have no other desire right now than to do anything but this. Personally, Id like to have a couple of kids. Id love to have a place in Los Angeles, a place in New York, and a place in Miami. I met my wife, Sue-Ling, in Europe, so Id like for my kids to spend a lot of time there.

If you had one wish what would it be?
To have a couple of beautiful kids and to be able to support my family doing what I love to do.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Generous, friendly, and relentless. Once I get something in my head, I go for it ten-fold.
